This week we celebrate the 17th annual National Apprentice Week, a week that promotes the benefits of apprenticeships and celebrates this alternate way for young people to kick start their careers without the need for traditional routes like University.

Here at B&CO we have had the privilege to onboard two apprentices so far, one of whom has just attained his AssocRICS accreditation.

We spoke to both Liam and Harry to gain some insight into their experiences during their apprenticeships.

See what they had to say here:

Liam Campbell | Assistant Project Manager

Undertaking an apprenticeship allowed me to learn at a pace that suits me, with support from a mentor who knows me. Earning and learning while not being burdened by student debt was certainly an incentive that attracted me to an apprenticeship. I believe I am in charge of my future and that I have an advantage in regards to having a wealth of industry experience that I can already call upon. Apprenticeships are a great option that I recommend to everyone.

Since joining the apprenticeship scheme, I have gained 3 years’ worth of hands-on industry experience and the AssocRICS accreditation. I also feel that I have successfully integrated with my colleagues and have become an asset to the business.

Now that I have finished my apprenticeship, I would say that finishing my college studies and achieving the AssocRICS accreditation would be my overall highlight. However, in regards to the projects I have worked on, I believe that gaining practical completion on Yarnwicke Phase 4, my first start-to-finish project would be my highlight.

Apprenticeships are a great option that I recommend to everyone due to the high quality of training, exposure to further opportunities, and the rewarding nature of the schemes.

Harry Maslin | Apprentice Project Manager

When considering whether to do an Apprenticeship or go to University I spent a long time weighing up the pros and cons of both options. For me, I felt an apprenticeship would allow me to learn more on the job, experience the real pressure associated with a career, and gain the qualifications I need to progress.

I was delighted with my decision to join the apprenticeship scheme. I feel that my growth is more advanced than it would have been in University due to the great support network, and learning from all the professionals I work with.

I am looking forward to progressing in the Apprenticeship scheme and achieving my AssocRICS accreditation, with hopes of becoming a fully qualified member of the RICS in the future.

I have already had so many highlights in the short time I have been there. I cannot wait to see the current projects I’m working on progress over time and complete in the coming years.
